Big Livin'
When I was a kid, the house we lived in a smallish, 1960's-style ranch house in a typical suburban neighborhood. With two parents and three kids, the house was cramped most of the time. But after my sister and brother left for college, I was able to spread out a bit, and I even turned my sister's room into my hangout place when she got married and left for good. Still, I dreamed of the day I would live in a large home, and thought it was be simply fabulous to have all the space I could ask for.
Of course, things didn't quite work out that way. When I first married, we lived in a tiny home, them moved to an average-sized home a year later when I was expecting my first child. Six years later, a year after the birth of my second child, we were on the move again--for more space and to be closer to my husband's job. We found a four-bedroom, two-story brick home on a golf course, with a full basement. I liked it, but I didn't love it, for two reasons: first, I had to clean that big ol' house, and that was totally not my idea of fun. Second, although the house was pretty big, it just didn't seem to be big in the right places. (My daughter's room was HUGE, for instance, but the living room was tiny.)
Now I live in a smaller home which is not perfect, but getting closer. My next move will hopefully take place when my youngest child finishes high school in five years. (He keeps begging us not to move before then.) And dh and I have our hearts set on a tiny little cottage on the other side of town. (Not one in particular, just in general.)
So I wondering, are we the only ones just dying for a smaller place to call home? Not according to lots of articles I've read recently. If you've got a hankerin' for a smaller home too, check out these sites:
