My House is Driving Me Crazy
Have you ever gotten into a funk, where everything about your home bothers you? I started to hate my stairwell so much a few weeks ago that I hired someone to come strip off the (very old, very scratched-up) stain and re-do it and add a runner, so I don't have to worry about my dogs destroying it.. Today, the guy is finishing up. Although I thought I'd feel so much better, I just don't. There's still so much to do in this house, it's making me crazy.
Here's a little background: I live in a 35-year-old home that was built using the design of Victorian homes built 100 years ago. Antique lighting, salvaged mantels (three of them), and other old architectural touches were used throughout the home, so few people can believe my home was only built a few decades ago. Other than the small closets and bathrooms, the house works for me and my family. So why is it driving me so nuts these days? A few reasons, I think. First, we bought the home from a 93-year-old man who hadn't done any decorating in, well, ever. We had to spend a month painting, ripping out carpeting, ripping down wallpaper, and doing other cosmetic work before we even moved in. Then we spend our first year here taking care of other things, like re-building the very unsafe deck and other big projects. We were so tired of working on the house after the first year, and so very broke from doing it, that we haven't done much in the past two years. Now I'm just itching to do more than a little re-decorating here and there. I want more change. I'm just not sure what.
Anyway, not that you've listened to me whine for way too long, I've decided to start by getting my home ready for summer. Want to know how I'm going to lighten up my digs and bring a little sunshine over the next few months? Well you'll have to stay tuned for my next post, coming soon...
