A Room of Our Own

My daughter and I are trying to get away from the boys in our lives. And by boys, I mean our husband/father and son/brother. Oh don't get me wrong, these guys are truly fabulous. I've been married to one of them for more than 18 years, and I gave birth to the other one. It's just that..well...they're boys. Boys that leave dirty clothes on the floor, play video games too much, talk about sports and dirt biking, and like to do stuff like burp. We don't mind all that stuff most of the time, but sometimes, my daughter and I just want a guy-free zone. And this weekend, we created one.

So I'd like to announce the newest addition to my home: The Girls' Lounge. We claimed an empty basement room (okay it wasn't quite empty. I made my husband move his exercise equipment elsewhere) and got to work. My daughter even made a "No Boys Allowed" sign for the door. What will we do with a room all to ourselves? Well it will definitely be a crafts room used for my daughter's scrapbooking and drawing, and my beading projects. But we also hope to use it to do things like light a candle, turn on some music, and read or just chill out. But the best part of it is that we decorated the room in a flowery, pink cottage style, and we both love the result. Here's what I did:

  • I started with a large, green area rug to cover the dark tan, tile flooring.
  • I added an old (but extremely comfortable) chair and ottoman, both upholstered in floral fabric. I added a yellow pillow and a purple chenille throw for snuggling up with a good book.
  • I didn't have a spare couch, so I brought a wicker loveseat in from the patio and made it over in super-feminine style. I covered two standard pillows with ivory shams for the back rest, and then covered the existing, black seat cushion with a pink blanket. I added a few more pink and khaki-patterned pillows for extra comfort.
  • I placed a large, folding table in front of a large window so we'd have a nice view of the woods as we craft. I also added an old wooden chair for seating at the table, and softened it up with an ivory linen slipcover.
  • I searched the house for artwork and accessories, and a much-loved painting of an angel became the room's focal point, hanging over the loveseat.

Check out the results:

Wow! You are a great wife, going to all that trouble and hard work just so your "boys" can play video games and burp in peace without distraction from the girls!

Very good of you. ;)

Oh, I love that angel painting! You don't happen to remember who the artist was, or where you found it?
